A Simple Process to Get Started

Choosing the right support for your child is an important decision. At Fireflies Learning, I take the time to understand your child's needs, current skills and learning goals so that instruction can be purposeful and individualized.

Here's what you can expect:

1. Complete the Inquiry Form

The first step is to complete the Private Teaching Inquiry Form.

The form gives me information about your child, including their age or grade, areas where they may need support, previous learning experiences and what you are hoping to achieve through private teaching.

This information helps me determine whether Fireflies Learning may be a good fit for your child's needs.

2. Connect for a 15-Minute Call

After I review your inquiry, I will contact you by email to arrange a 15-minute introductory call.

This is an opportunity to discuss your child's learning needs, answer your questions, provide information on Fireflies Learning and talk about the most appropriate next steps.

3. Complete a Diagnostic Assessment

Students begin with a Diagnostic Assessment.

Assessment helps identify your child's current skills, strengths and areas for growth. It also provides valuable information about how your child approaches learning and which skills need the most attention.

The information gathered helps guide my instructional decisions and determine an appropriate starting point for teaching.

4. Receive Individualized Recommendations

Following the assessment, I review the information gathered and identify instructional priorities.

Recommendations may include:

• Areas of strength

• Skills that are developing

• Areas for further instruction or practice

• Recommended learning goals

• Instructional priorities

• Recommended lesson frequency and format based on your child's needs

• A proposed lesson plan

The goal is to ensure that instruction begins at the appropriate level and focuses on the skills your child is ready to develop next.

5. Select Your Program & Schedule Lessons

Once we have discussed the recommendations, you can choose the program and lesson format that best fits your child's needs.

I will send you a Lesson Availability Form where you can indicate the days and times that work best for your family. Based on your availability and my teaching schedule, I will provide you with a consistent weekly lesson time.

You will then purchase a package of lessons, and I will schedule the number of lessons included in your package on your regular day(s) and time.

Consistent scheduling helps students build routines and allows instruction to continue in a structured and cumulative sequence.

Private teaching is available in person in Oakville or virtually through Google Meet, depending on the program and availability.

6. Begin Individualized Instruction

Once lessons begin, instruction is guided by your child's current skills, learning goals and progress.

Lessons are explicit, systematic and purposeful, with new skills introduced and practised in a structured sequence.

Instruction may include literacy areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, reading fluency, spelling, morphology, vocabulary, background knowledge, comprehension and writing, as well as mathematics.

7. Monitor Progress & Adjust Instruction

Assessment does not stop once lessons begin.

Student progress is tracked at the end of each lesson using a Lesson Tracker, documenting the skills taught, student performance and areas that may need additional practice or review.

Every 10th lesson, a more formal Progress Check-In is completed to review growth, identify areas of continued need and determine whether instructional priorities should be adjusted.

This ongoing cycle helps ensure that instruction continues to respond to your child's development.
